Dead or thinning patches in your lawn can often point to grass grub or porina caterpillar infestations.
If you’ve battled them before, you’ll know how quickly grass grub can decimate healthy lush lawns by damaging roots and weakening grass. The good news is there’s a simple way to treat them, with Acelepryn® GR.
What are grass grubs?
The cycle starts when beetles lay their eggs in the soil during spring and summer. These hatch into larvae: creamy-white, “C”-shaped grubs with brown heads, which live just below the lawn in the root zone. They feed on grass roots and cause visible damage as the lawn yellows off in colour and the grass thins out.

As the larvae mature, they transform into small, slow-flying, bronze (or light-brown) beetles. These adult beetles often emerge on warm, still evenings and may feed on the leaves of shrubs and fruit trees and can do a lot of damage.
Safe for families and pets
One of the biggest worries for homeowners when it comes to treating lawn pests is if it will impact pets or children playing on the lawn.
Unlike many traditional insecticides, Acelepryn® GR has no re-entry period. Once you’ve applied it and watered it in, pets and children can safely use the lawn straight away.
When to apply
- The appearance of over-wintering adult pests (beetles flying over lawn, caterpillars crawling on lawn) is an indicator to use Acelepryn.
- As per the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) guidelines, Acelepryn can be applied once in a calendar year. Best results are achieved with an application in the early spring season.
- Up to 6 months insect control can be achieved when Acelepryn is applied at the higher rate, giving your lawn protection for the full insect season.
- If you have signs of active adults, pair Acelepryn® with a fast-acting knockdown product (ask your local garden centre). The knockdown deals with the adults right now, while Acelepryn® targets early larvae stage to break the life cycle and keep protection going.
Dealing with existing damage
If your lawn already has bare patches, treat first as above to stop the cycle. Then repair by reseeding or over-sowing those areas. Over time, consistent treatment will break the grub problem and help your lawn recover.
