Kikuyu Grass

Kikuyu Grass

Why is there so much Kikuyu Grass? How do you get rid of it?

Kikuyu is abundant because it is so robust, and invariably overtakes other grass species when it finds its way into a lawn.

Introduced into New Zealand many years ago from East Africa, it has very successfully naturalised in numerous coastal and Northern regions of New Zealand.

Before attempting to eradicate the Kikuyu from your lawn, you should consider whether the Kikuyu is actually providing you with a more durable lawn than your existing grass species. It's known to survive where other lawn seed types would struggle or need a lot of maintenance.

Herbicides like glyphosate will kill Kikuyu, but it may well be necessary to spray twice to achieve total eradication. Follow-up applications at a later date may be critical to prevent the Kikuyu from returning.
