How to Water Raised Garden Beds During Water Restrictions

· 1 min read

Q: How can I keep my raised garden beds evenly watered during hot summers without using too much water?

There are several practical ways to keep raised beds productive while using water more efficiently.

Water at the right time

Early morning or late afternoon is best. Less water is lost to evaporation and plants can take up moisture more effectively. Water deeply and less often rather than giving a light sprinkle every day.

Mulch, mulch, mulch

Mulching is one of the most effective ways to save water. A layer of bark mulch or compost over the soil keeps it cooler and cuts moisture loss on hot, sunny days.

Keep mulch a few centimetres clear of plant stems.

Build up organic matter

When planting a new crop, mix fresh Daltons Compost into the soil. Organic matter improves soil structure and increases its water-holding capacity, so moisture stays within reach of roots for longer.

Try water storage crystals

You can also mix water storage crystals into the soil at planting time. They absorb and store water and nutrients, then slowly release them back into the soil, reducing wastage and protecting plants from drying out.

Check your irrigation habits

Pay attention to how often you water, how long irrigation runs and how much your plants actually need. A little fine-tuning can keep beds healthy while keeping water use, and costs, under control.
