Flower Garden Care
Share
Summer flowering annuals are now finishing and need to be replaced with annuals that will flower in the autumn and then into winter.
What to Plant
- Alyssums, calendulas, cornflowers, poppies, snapdragons, stocks, sweet Williams, violas, and wallflowers.
- For an instant colour boost, plant ‘potted colour’- larger, already-flowering annuals that establish quickly.
- Remember to enrich the soil with fresh compost before planting to support strong growth.
Bulb Planting For Spring Blooms
Keep planting out your spring bulbs. Varieties to plant this month include:
- Anemone, Babiana, Crocus, Freesia, Hyacinth, Iris, Jonquil, Lachenalia, Muscari, Ranunculus, and Tulips.
- As per our tips last month, make sure you select the best site and prepare the soil well by adding Premium Bulb Mix.
- Bulbs also grow well in pots - use our guide for more help on how to plant them in containers.
Rose Care
Enjoy the final autumn flush of blooms before winter arrives.
- Mulch around the base of both bush and climbing roses to keep roots protected and soil moist.
- Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued flowering throughout autumn.
Lawn Care
March is the lead-up to the best lawn renovation period (April), but you can get a head start with preparation.
- Start by importing quality lawn soil, then level the ground and improve drainage so you're ready to sow in April.
- As grass growth picks up after summer, lower the mower height slightly for a tidier law.
- If your lawn is looking a bit tired, aerate compacted areas to improve drainage and root growth.
